Cracked windshields seem to be a Dallas tradition! You see them everywhere. Usually, those huge cracks started out as a small rock chip that could have easily been repaired. But once a windshield is cracked all the way across ("cracked out"), it has to be replaced.
Temperature changes, wind pressure, and road vibrations can all cause a rock chip or small crack to spread, sometimes rapidly.
To restore the structural integrity of the windshield, both the original rock chip and the crack must be repaired.
It is important to identify the type of crack to determine if your windshield is repairable. The American National Standard Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard (ROLAGS) identifies the following types of cracks:
